Our History

Matoaca Elementary School, located in the village of Matoaca on the northern bank of the Appomattox River, served the community in the location situated on Route 36/River Road since 1937. The Matoaca community has a great sense of pride for its school and the children who attend. No matter how young or old, there is a feeling of ownership in the school community as many generations have passed through the doors getting an excellent education. The rich history of Matoaca Elementary resonates throughout the community as you can expect on any given day there may be a visit from someone with a story of when they were a student. Many stories that have been passed from generation to generation about time spent at Matoaca Elementary.

In 2020-2021, the Matoaca Elementary School community celebrated the opening of a new school building at 20300 Halloway Avenue, South Chesterfield, Virginia 23803.  The new school building is located on the former Matoaca Middle School West Campus. The building opened during the pandemic which presented new challenges, however, our dedicated school staff were able to welcome many students blending three schools into one school family.  We look forward to the day we can welcome the community into this beautiful building.

Matoaca Elementary serves a diversified, suburban, semi-rural community. The Matoaca families reside on farms, in neighborhoods and numerous old, historic homes. Several churches serve the community with programs for all age levels. Other active organizations include The Volunteer Firemen’s Group, a Volunteer Rescue Squad, Ruritan Club, Women’s Club, County Friends of the Library, 4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Matoaca Youth Association. Nearby, Lake Chesdin and the Appomattox River offer many recreational activities and facilities.

Matoaca Elementary school operates as an excited, focused and determined learning community. We face our challenges and make them our greatest successes. Constant focus on quality instruction, expanded use of data to determine learning needs, increased parent and community involvement and additional opportunities to recognize and celebrate students’ efforts have combined to help the entire Matoaca Elementary School community soar to new heights. Matoaca Elementary is truly “the best kept secret in Chesterfield County.”
